Does ejacultaion decrease the size of the prostratee

Post a new topicby Can'tgoanymore on Sun Nov 23, 2008 12:02 pm

I have recently completed a prostate biopsy and a bladder function
test and have been told not to have any sexual activity for a week.
I am also taking Uroxatral & Avodart. BPH is the reason I can't urinate
but I was told that the BPH may have come about as a result of the
bladder expanding, retaining urine and not creating an impulse to
urinate, AUR(Acute Urinary Retention. My bladder is about 4 times the
size of a normal bladder but the bladder walls remain thick. I have to
catherize myself 4 to 5 times a day to drain the bladder.

My questions are: does ejaculation actually decrease the size of the prostate?
Does increased frequency of ejaculation help? Is normal sex working for
others? Is my wife in any jeopardy? I've read various opinions but I'd
like input from people actually experiencing the situation.

I'm surprised your urologist did not answer these questions for you when you went in for your biopsy and your bladder test. But, I think you are talking about two different things here. One is BPH. A big prostate gland. The other is acute urinary retention. That is a bladder problem, not a prostate problem.
Although they are linked, I think your biggest problem now is the retention, and I feel safe in saying that ejaculation will not "shrink" the prostate. It may or may not have a bit of an effect on your ability to urinate, as I found in my own case. But not really "shrinking" the prostate as some drugs do, like Avodart.
The urinary retention puts you at risk of a bladder infection if you let the urine remain there too long. And you sure don't want that. I just went through that due to BPH. Nasty. And no, I don't think the bladder problem "caused" the BPH. Again, I am not a doctor, but I'm very sure your urologist can answer these concerns with more expertise than I would ever have. I am just going on my own experience here.
You should be able to have normal sex if you keep these things under control. The BPH can definitely affect the amount that you ejaculate, especially along with Flomax, etc. depending on how much you take. When I went to twice the amount of Flomax that I was used to taking, it had a big effect on that.
Good Luck.

I'm not sure why, but ejaculation often allows me to urinate almost normally for a while, a couple of hours at most.

Years before I ever had a problem with BPH, I noticed that I usually had to urinate right after ejaculation and it was pretty strong. So, I think it's just a natural tendency among most guys to to that
and it's probably normal. As you said, it doesn't last very long.

Can'tgoanymore,
The male prostate gland is designed to have sex , at least, once a day. As we get older, the opportunity or desire to have sex decreases. Unfortunately, the prostate which produces 1/10 of a teaspoon of prostate fluid a day and 10 times that amount when a male is aroused and does not stop functioning just because we are getting older. This additional prostate fluid if not released can enlarge the prostate gland and create urinary problems. Not being a doctor has forced me to research prostate disorders and the above is some of the results of my research. You should search the web for info on " prostate massage ". I don't use it, but it could help.

Can'tgoanymore,
Let me add this. Ejaculation may not shrink the prostate gland, but it should limit its enlargement. Just a little common sense.
